Memory - random-access memory (RAM) usually refers to a form of semiconductor storage known as random-access memory (RAM)
In computer terms memory is short term and anything stored in RAM is lost when the power is turned off.
It is used to hold information while a programme or file is open. In digital imaging the image when opened is held in ram. In order for your computer to work quickly and efficiently you need to have enough ram to hold your operating system the programmes you are using and the files you are working on. This will vary depending on each of the above.

Operating Systems

Typically useage

Linux 500mb
Windows 2000 / XP with anti virus 700mb
Windows Vista / 7 with anti virus 1500mb
Windows 8 / 10 with anti virus 2000mb
Mac OS 2000mb

Programmes

Gnu Image Manipulation Program (Gimp) 100mb
Photoshop 600mb

As a guide for the absolute minimum ram you need, add up the memory used by your operating system, the image manipulation programme and then add 1gb for the files you are working on.
eg. Linux 500mb + Gnu Image Manipulation Program (Gimp) 100mb + 1gb = 1.5gb or 2gb
eg. Mac OS 2000mb + Photoshop 600mb + 1gb = 3.5gb
eg. Windows 7 with anti virus 1500mb + Photoshop 600mb + 1gb = 3gb
eg. Windows 10 with anti virus 2000mb + Photoshop 600mb + 1gb = 3.5gb

If you want to work on multiple files you need more ram.
If you have other programs running, image browser, e-mail, internet browsers, or like to play music while you work, you will need more ram.
Realistically you should double the minimum requirements, so For a Linux based machine 4GB, for a Window 10 or Mac OSX machine 8gb would be minimum.

You need the right RAM for your computer, and every motherboard will have a maximum amount you can install.

A 32 bit operating system can use 3.2gb of ram to use more you need a 64 bit operating system.
